Kazuki Takahashi drowned while trying to rescue civilians from Riptide

Stars & Stripes of the US Department of Defense has reported that Kazuki Takahashi died while trying to rescue an Army Major and two civilians who were caught in a riptide and were being pulled into the water.

Major Robert Bourgeau was an Army officer and a diver. He heard the cry of a mother who wanted to save her daughter, 11 years old, and another US officer from a riptide at Mermaid’s Grotto, Onna village, Okinawa. Six-foot waves struck the individuals, creating a whirlpool.

Bourgeau, 49 years old, then jumped in the water to save them all. He grabbed the girl and began swimming back. However, he discovered that her mother had also been sucked into the water. He managed to save them both and rescued the soldier. Bourgeau recalled, “I grabbed mom and [the girl] and then I kicked for all of life.”

However, the Major was losing strength so he swam back, guiding the officer back to the shore. Takahashi had apparently jumped in the water to assist Bourgeau but the Major failed to notice him during the rescue operation. The instructor’s students spotted him and caught a glimpse of him slowly disappearing into waves.

Takahashi’s body was found on July 6

Takahashi was found with snorkelling gear two days later in Awa (Nago city in Okinawa), approximately 1,000 feet off the coast. Later, his rental car was found at Mermaid’s Grotto. It was thought that he died from a drowning accident. No foul play was reported.
